October Storytelling Event

Each year, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival holds Go Local events across the country. We are delighted to be working with them for the second year in a row, exploring how stories link us to the past, ground us in the present and and re-imagine the future. We’ll be holding the events upstairs at the Ross Institute in Halkirk.

Wheelchair and hearing impairment friendly. Please contact us with any questions about accessibility. We will do our best to continually make our spaces welcoming and inclusive.

12-2pm

Jane Mather

Hands-on stones (suited for kids up to 7yo)

In a family-friendly workshop inspired by the rich geology and archaeology of Caithness, from fossil fish of Lake Orcadie to megaliths and Brochs, Jane will share stories of the past and encourage participants to imagine a fossil of the future… something our society might leave behind that will tell a story about how we live.

3-5pm

Alex Patience

We All Love Steens – Big & Sma Bairns (ages 7+)

The use of stone in Caithness culture dates back to around 3000BC but walk any beach or road and your eyes catch ‘a steen thit jist needs picken up’ and holds our history. Alex hands the attendees a stone craft to take home and a celebration of stories.

6-8pm

Greg MacAllein

Old Fish, New Bones (for adults)

Griogair will guide us through layers of stone, from pondering on pebbles to the meaning and placement of rock monuments by people long ago. This will be an excavation of entrenched stories, deeply held beliefs and some of the oldest tales known to man.

At 8pm

We will be holding a jam session! We had a great evening in June, and invite musicians, singers and noise makers of all backgrounds to come along and take part. This is a great chance for musicians to meet each other, find out about other musical groups and bring about sound in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Refreshments provided, doors close at 10:30pm, no need to book.
