Justine Bainbridge
“Many of us in Scotland can trace our ancestors occupation’s to the land and sea – fishermen, knitters, shepherds – and the same is true for me. Within my creative work I endeavour to stay true to my roots in Orkney, Shetland, and here in Caithness by using traditional stitches and techniques, inherited antique wool, locally spun yarn, and salvaged and gathered minerals, rocks, and organic materials.
The nature of life both cyclic and linear is a source of infinite fascination, as are the traces and fragments we leave behind, thus I’m particularly interested in how the past and present are inextricably linked. I have an unconditional love for the coastline and adjacent landscape in all its many forms, and document these as a visual narrative of my wanderings across Scotland in search of geological delights in the mediums of photography, glass, illustrative watercolour, found object assemblage, textiles, and precious metals.
Resources are used wisely and with integrity, I recycle and reuse all my materials, and always aim to tread lightly by being sustainable and as kind to the planet as humanly possible.”
