“I have always been fascinated by visible geological features, vessels, reliquaries, boats, architecture with both human and animal forms all giving inspiration for the overall 3- dimensional shape and decoration on my pieces.
Often the pieces are deliberately ambiguous in the manner of surrealism adding mystery and drama to the work. I particularly like the imagined organic imagery created by the surrealist painter Tinguely and the strange portraits of the earlier Arcimboldo. Pushing the material to its limits also gives drama to my work as there are variations in thickness, stretched and twisted forms and a play on balance which is unconventional. I use white stoneware, earthenware, terracotta and crank clays, sometimes in combination decorating with a paint on glaze or oxides which get sponged back to enhance the texture and surface detail.”
