DESCRIPTION:Debut Performance by the Caithness Handbell Ringers\n \n  \nThis is an extraordinary opportunity to hear the debut performance of a piece of music composed for the Carnival of Plants. \nKatrina Gordon worked with Thurso resident Han Mainland to compose a piece of music for handbells\, flute and plant. The piece expresses the experience of living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome\, a connective tissue disorder. \nHan lives with this condition\, and with a joy and whim which produced the idea of including a plant synthesiser in this music. The handbells set the cheerful tone of this piece\, while the plant provides a subtle and unnoticeable intrusion at first. Flute comes in with a tune which is neither major nor minor but something in between\, with the high airy notes symbolising the delight which Han enjoys video games and time with friends. Then the plant takes a more centralised position. The synthesiser picks up minute changes in the water content of the plant’s leaves\, and the soil – these changes are converted into sound by the synth. There is noticably more sound produced when the plant is interacted with\, but significantly\, the sounds produced are not in time with the music: they are not predictable\, they are not controllable. This mirrors the way that a health condition affects every day life. It is always there\, sometimes quiet\, sometimes louder\, but always present. \nIt is an honour to be able to host this collaboration\, and the performance will be a treat. \nBook a ticket for a guaranteed seat\, but do know that you will be able to come in and stand for the performance. DESCRIPTION:Life drawing session which celebrates the queer body\nThis session will be held to rase money fro 2 LGBTQIA+ charities: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ and https://lgbthealth.org.uk/ \n\nClothed model in the same pose throughout both sessions\nBring your own materials\, and something to put on the floor to catch paint/dust if you think you could make some mess (extra art!).\nNo previous drawing experience is needed – this is a welcoming and supportive environment\nMorning session from 10am – 12pm (with gentle guidance) and the afternoon from 1pm – 3pm. You are welcome to book onto one or both.\n5 min breaks at each hour\, and people are welcome to go to the bathroom\, and take their own breaks throughout\nYou can book an easel\, a stool (bring your own if you can) or a sofa/floor space\nThis is not a step-free space\, there are narrow stairs to get up\n\nIf you have any questions\, please get in touch at sidhcart@gmail.com. \nThis will above all be a time to support the queer\, trans and LGBTQIA+ community who live with us and over the seas. This will be a non-judgemental\, welcoming space where difference is celebrated. \nWe would like artworks to be included in a mini exhibition from 20th – 27th June. Artworks can be mounted on the easels\, or displayed in another way.
